York, Scotland(Edinburgh), and Lake District

So this past week we went on a fun, long trip! We first stopped in York.  It was pretty cold and windy up there. We went to York Minster, which was huge.  It had the most original medieval stained glass in England!  It is also the largest gothic church here too!  One day we ate lunch at a restaurant called 'Slug and Lettuce'.  Sounds like a weird name, but it actually was really good and pretty cheap!!!

We then traveled up to Edinburgh, Scotland.  We drove for quite a long time.  Luckily we had bought Bourne Ultimatum for 2 pounds and that helped the time go faster.  Edinburgh was such a cool town and everything was so close together.  We went to Edingburgh Castle.  There were cool views of the city.  There were some guards up there, and don't worry... I got one to smile(almost a laugh). We saw so many guys walking around in quilts and saw someone playing the bagpipes.  It was cool!  Arthurs seat is a cool hike and where you can see a view of the entire city and the sea.  It was so windy at the top, but felt good since we hiked it so fast and were sweaty!  While there we ate at 'The Elephant House', where JK Rolling got some inspiration and quite frequently went.  We had the same view that she talked about of the castle and graveyard.  After eating there, we heard that in that graveyard was Tom Riddle's grave.  So we went and checked it out two different times. The last time we went late one night and some scared each other. It was fun!

No big deal... it's just massive!

We then traveled to the Lake District.  It was such a beautiful area!  It was so green, had waterfalls, lakes, and was just so cool!  We went on a boat ride on Lake Windermere.  It was awesome! It rained a little while we were on it, but made it so much fun.  It was such a small town, but so fun!   We had dinner at some restaurant and I decided to get a drink rather than the usual tap water.  I got their lemonade.  Their lemonade here is completely different.  It was clear, and tasted like a perfumy lemonade.  That was the first and last time I will have lemonade here:).  We then went to our hostel up on the hill over looking the lake.  I was surprised that the bus made it all the way up since it was such a tight squeeze!  While at the hostel we watched Harry Potter 4, the season finale of American Idol(british commercials were hilarious to see!), and played scum and banana grams(which is like speed scrabble).  The next day we went on walk/hike.  It had rained the day before, but it was supposed to be okay. We saw a cool wall on the way up.  Along the way there was a cool lake and slate canyons.  We also got towards the top and realized the rain hadn't dried up and was still coming down.  So many ruined their shoes.  I wasn't going to ruin my white shoes, so I took them off and walked barefoot until I got to drier ground.  Britton decided to try to jump the area.  He almost made it, but landed on some mud and ended up sliding down and getting muddy.  What an eventful day.  It was worth it cause at the top we saw a great view, had the royal air force fly over really low, and added some rocks to the pile(every hiker brings one up from the bottom and adds to the hill of rocks!).  It was fun.  We then headed back on the bus for five hours. We got Mcdonalds on the way back and watched Star Trek(which made it go quicker!). What a fun trip!

Hampton Court and Charles Darwins House

So we did some day trips last week as a group.  One day we went to Hampton Court.  It is an old palace and cool to see. It is huge and has some huge gardens.  It took like an hour by a coach bus.

After going there we stopped by Charles Darwins house.  It was cool to see.  We couldn't take pictures inside, so you can only see the outside.

On another day we went to Cambridge.  It was about an hour by train.  We had tours of different parts by students from the university because our professor had a connection in(it is their finals time so typically no tourists could go in.... but we were lucky!).  I saw Wrens Library where one of the originals of Winnie the Pooh books are.  We also went 'punting' on the river. Punting is basically a flat, cheap gondola.  It was so hard but fun! You could see the backsides of the colleges.  It was cool.  I was starving by the end cause I didn't have lunch and we finished the tour later than expected, so we got a quick Subway footlong sandwich on the way home.  On the train ride home I was completely knocked out. My group had to wake me up and I was like 'Oh did the train stop?'.... as the train looked completely empty haha.  But, at least they didn't leave me haha  We had some fun little mini trips and we are off on a big one to York and Scotland this week! So exciting!
